FAQ

What’s the difference between Business Shirts and Casual Shirts?

Shorten the Shirt Length
The biggest difference between tucked-in business shirts and untucked casual shirts is the shorter shirt length. We recommend shortening the shirt length anywhere from 1.5” to 2.5” for an untucked, casual size based on your business shirt fit.

Increase the midsection
If you are wearing your business shirts on the slimmer side in the midsection, you’ll definitely want to increase the midsection width by at least 0.5” – 1” to allow the shirt to fall straighter and not create an hourglass silhouette at your hips. If the midsection is too trim on a shirt you plan to wear untucked, you will find the shirt bunching up at the waistline and not falling comfortably over the top of your pants.

Widen the Chest and Sleeves
Additionally, some find that increasing the chest width 0.5″ makes for a more comfortable, easygoing look. This is particularly true if you’ve dialed in your business shirts to a razor sharp tailored fit. If your business shirts are on the comfortable and classic fit side, then you can skip the additional fine-tuning and just shorten the shirt length for your ideal untucked size.

Business Shirt is Too Tight at the Stomach
Problem description
The business shirt is too tight at the stomach, causing it to pull uncomfortably or simply look unflattering. This could be a problem at all times or primarily when sitting.

Solution
The answer to this problem is fairly straightforward: increase the midsection width of the shirt. This will provide more fabric around the belly, reducing any uncomfortable tightness there as well as allowing the shirt to drape more flatteringly around the midsection.
How the adjustment works
Increasing the midsection width by 1/2″ increases the midsection circumference by 1″. If you have “default bottom width” selected, the system will typically increase the bottom of the shirt the same amount, but you should take care to consider this adjustment as well.

Sleeves are too Long
Problem description
It feels like the sleeves are coming down too far over your hands. Perhaps when you wear a jacket you are showing too much cuff, etc.
How the sleeve length should fit
With your arms hanging relaxed at your sides and the cuffs of the shirt unbuttoned, the sleeves should come down to the center of the back of the hand (or the first knuckle of your thumb). This may seem too long to some folks, but the key is to also make sure that the cuffs are sized appropriately to your wrists. This way, when the cuffs are buttoned they will prevent the cuff from sliding too far over your hand. This extra length will allow you to bend and raise your arms without the cuff sliding up over your forearm.

Shrinkage
We try to account for shrinkage with how we long we cut the sleeves, so a 34” sleeve should measure 34.5” right out of the box. If the sleeves seem too long consider that they will shrink with the first few washings.

Adjusting the cuffs tighter
If the cuffs are already stopping the cuff at the correct spot on the hand, but there is too much extra fabric blousing above the cuff, then you do not want to make the cuffs tighter. However, if the cuff is coming too far down over the persons hand, tightening the cuff can improve the fit. The cuff should fit comfortably around your wrist but be tight enough that when buttoned it doesn’t slide too far over your hand. Our general rule of thumb is that the cuff size should be 1.75-2” larger than the measurement of your wrist. (Note, we measure cuffs from center of button to button hole).

Showing ¼” to ½” cuff with a sport coat on
Many customers will want to adjust their sleeve length such that the cuff pops out just the right amount from their sport coat. The best way to do this is to follow the guidelines to get the sleeve length to fit perfectly in and of itself. Keep in mind that getting the right amount of cuff to show may require the length of the sleeves of the sport coat to be adjusted.

Sleeves are too Short
Problem description
Standing straight up, with your arms at your sides, the sleeves of the shirt are not quite reaching the large wrist bone.

With the cuffs buttoned, they should just cover the large wrist bone, but not the palm. This extra length will allow you to bend and raise your arms without the cuff sliding far up your forearm.

Business Shirt Comes Untucked
Problem description
The business shirt comes untucked during the day. Even with just a little bit of moving around you notice that the shirt is coming out of your pants and looking sloppy.

Lengthen the shirt
If you intend to wear the business shirt tucked in, then you’ll want to optimize the fit to stay tucked in and look nicely. We suggest increasing the shirt length such that it reaches the bottom of your butt. Having at least 5″ of shirt below your belt line is key to ensuring that when you raise your arms and move around during the day, the shirt does not come outside of your waistline.

Bottom width adjustment
By default, when creating a shirt size with Shirtable, the bottom width of the shirt will be automatically determined by our sizing algorithm behind the scenes. Generally, decreasing the midsection width, making the shirt slimmer in the torso, should create the ideal bottom width. However, if your tucked-in business shirt size is as slim as you desire but you still find the bottom opening of the shirt too loose around your hips, specifying a decreased bottom width will alleviate this problem while helping your shirt stayed tucked in more securely.

Can I change or cancel my order?
Once you have paid for your order; adding your measurements to your order on My Orders and profiles is the last stage of the order process.
When do I pay?
You pay for your orders when you place your order. Please note that, even if you have paid in full, your order will not be processed unless you have also completed a full set of measurements.
Why do I need to give you my height and weight?
These details help our algorithm achieve precise measurement calculations. If necessary, feel free to estimate your weight — a few lbs difference does not impact the accuracy of your measurement profile.
